🚆 Headway Huddersfield & District Takes to the Rails with “Try the Train” – A Day Trip to Bridlington
On Wednesday 6th August 2025, a group of our brain injury survivors, carers, and volunteers embarked on a memorable journey from Brockholes to Bridlington, thanks to the fantastic support of the Penistone Line Partnership and Northern Rail’s “Try the Train” initiative.
This was our second escorted train travel experience, following a successful short trip to Barnsley earlier in the year. “Try the Train” is a fully funded initiative from Northern Trains, designed to build confidence and independence in rail travel for those who may find public transport daunting. For our service users, it’s more than just a day out — it’s a step toward reclaiming autonomy and exploring the world beyond their doorstep.
🚉 The Journey
Under the expert guidance of Sarah Wells from the Penistone Line Partnership, our group navigated multiple train changes via Meadowhall, with Passenger Assistance working smoothly on 7 out of 8 occasions. While we did encounter a minor hiccup on the return leg from Bridlington, the overall coordination and support were excellent — a testament to the growing success of inclusive travel initiatives.
🌊 Seaside Adventures
Once in Bridlington, we split into three groups to explore the harbour and South Bay, soaking in the sea air and enjoying the sights. A highlight for many was a delicious fish and chip lunch overlooking the harbour, offering a chance to relax, chat, and take in the coastal views.
💬 Reflections
Though the day was physically tiring, especially for our brain injury survivors, the emotional and social benefits were clear. One member’s heartfelt feedback captured the spirit of the day perfectly:
“Thanks again for a wonderful day for all of us.”
🙌 Why It Matters
Trips like these are more than just outings — they’re opportunities for connection, confidence-building, and joy. We’re incredibly grateful to Northern Rail, Penistone Line Partnership, and especially Sarah Wells for making this possible. Their commitment to accessible travel is helping our community rediscover the freedom of movement and the simple pleasure of a day by the sea.
We look forward to more adventures on the rails — and to continuing our journey toward greater independence and inclusion.
