Headway Huddersfield & District AGM – 1 April 2026
Reflecting on another year of volunteer-led support for brain injury survivors
On 1 April 2026, Headway Huddersfield & District held its Annual General Meeting — an important moment each year where we pause, reflect, and ensure the smooth running of our volunteer-led branch of Headway – the brain injury association.
Although the AGM is the “formal” part of what we do, it’s also a reminder of the dedication, teamwork, and community spirit that keep our branch thriving.
A Warm Welcome and Formal Business
Our Chairman opened the meeting by welcoming all members in attendance and noting apologies from those unable to join us. We then reviewed and approved the minutes from our previous AGM, held on 2 April 2025.
The meeting continued with the presentation of reports from the Chairman, Vice Chair, and Treasurer.
Summary of Reports Presented at the AGM
The AGM included three formal reports from the Chairman, Vice Chair and Treasurer, each highlighting a year of growth, activity and commitment across Headway Huddersfield & District.
Chairman’s Report – Adrian Hawley
Adrian reflected on what he described as “one of our most successful years” in 2025, noting the increased engagement across events, social media and partnership working. The branch held eight committee meetings and delivered a full programme of monthly activities, including drop‑ins, yoga, outings and online sessions.
He highlighted the positive impact of the new Headway UK retail shop in Huddersfield, which has generated regular enquiries and new members. Adrian also celebrated a busy year of outings—from museum visits and canal trips to the Bridlington excursion—and thanked partners such as the Penistone Line Partnership, SP Therapy Services, France & Associates, and many others for their support.
Fundraising was a major success, with the Summer Ball raising over £4,500 and the Study Day generating more than £800. Adrian also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of volunteers and committee members, and shared updates on future plans, including progressing towards becoming a registered Headway charity and improving RSVP systems for members.
Vice Chair’s Report – Gill Buckingham
Gill opened with a heartfelt thank you to Adrian for his exceptional dedication, noting that much of his work happens behind the scenes but makes a profound difference to the branch. She also expressed gratitude to members, emphasising that they are the heart of the organisation.
Gill spoke candidly about the challenges of sustaining a volunteer‑led branch, reminding members that every activity, event and fundraising effort relies on people giving their time. She encouraged members to stay engaged—whether by attending events, supporting fundraising or spreading the word—stressing that collective involvement is essential for Headway Huddersfield & District to continue thriving into the future.
Treasurer’s Report – Marie Peacock
Marie reported a positive financial position at the end of 2025, with total income of £12,235.44 and expenditure of £9,749.41. The branch held £11,737.62 across its Yorkshire Building Society and Unity Trust Bank accounts, plus £426.14 in petty cash. She explained the decision to retain the YBS account for its higher interest rate and to use the Unity Trust account for day‑to‑day transactions.
Although income was lower than the previous year due to the absence of one‑off grants, all funds raised came from proactive fundraising and donations. Key income sources included the 007‑themed Summer Ball (£4,545.90 net), the Study Day (£835.13 net), Together Over Tapas (£510 net), bank interest, and donations totalling £6,071.91.
Expenditure increased slightly, reflecting a rise in activities offered to members, including yoga, outings, workshops, meals and the annual Christmas event. Marie concluded by confirming that the branch moves into 2026 in a strong financial position.
These reflections highlighted another year of growth, resilience, and meaningful support for survivors, families, carers, and professionals across Huddersfield, Calderdale, and Kirklees.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Stephanie Jessop
One of the most significant moments of the AGM was offering a sincere vote of thanks to Stephanie Jessop, who retired from the committee at this meeting.
Steph has been part of Headway Huddersfield & District since its very beginning on 7 June 2004. Her commitment, warmth, and unwavering support have shaped the branch for more than two decades. While she is stepping back from committee duties, we are delighted that she remains a valued member of our community.
Her contribution has been extraordinary, and her legacy continues in the work we do every day.
Committee Appointments for 2026–2027
The next item on the agenda was the appointment of the committee. A proposal was made by Andrea Pearson and seconded by Michael Pickles to reappoint the existing committee members and to welcome Robert Knight back onto the committee.
We extend our thanks to the following individuals for continuing to serve:
Adrian
Gill
Karen
Tara
Lucy
Brionie
Esmee
Ann
Margaret
Marie
Their dedication ensures that our branch remains strong, supportive, and forward‑looking.
Closing the AGM – and Enjoying Time Together
With no items raised under Any Other Business, we brought the AGM to a close and moved on to something our members always appreciate — a buffet of sandwiches and drinks lovingly prepared by our volunteers Jenni, Tara, Ben, and Jude.
As always, the food and the company were excellent. It was a lovely way to round off the formalities and reconnect as a community.
Looking Ahead
The AGM is a reminder of how much can be achieved when volunteers, survivors, families, and professionals come together with a shared purpose. We are grateful to everyone who supports Headway Huddersfield & District — whether by attending sessions, volunteering time, fundraising, or simply spreading the word.
Here’s to another year of compassion, connection, and making a difference.
