🍬 Sweet Reminiscence & Community Connection: A Drop-In to Remember
On Wednesday 5th November, Headway Huddersfield & District hosted a heartwarming drop-in session at Lindley Methodist Church Centre, where memory, history, and community came together in the most delightful way.
We were thrilled to welcome Sharon from The Sweetest Thing in Brighouse, who brought her unique sweet reminiscence experience to our members. With a table full of treats and a treasure trove of stories, Sharon guided us through the fascinating history of confectionery—from the ancient Egyptians’ use of marshmallow root to the launch of Fry’s Chocolate Cream in 1866, and the modern-day creations of Dobson’s of Elland.
Her presentation wasn’t just about sweets—it was about connection. Each sugary sample sparked memories, laughter, and conversation, reminding us how powerful sensory experiences can be in bringing people together. Sharon was joined by Duke of Edinburgh volunteer Ben Buckingham, whose cheerful support helped make the session run smoothly.
We were especially pleased to welcome a new member who is caring for her partner following a recent stroke. Her courage and openness were deeply appreciated, and we hope she found comfort and support among our Headway community.
As always, our incredible volunteers—Jodie, Karen, Ann, Gill, and Adrian—were the backbone of the session, offering warm welcomes, practical help, and plenty of smiles. A special thank you to Ann for sharing an inspiring update on Robert’s solo travels across India, made possible by a fantastic travel company committed to accessible adventures.
This session was a beautiful reminder of what Headway is all about: shared stories, inclusive support, and moments of joy. We’re already looking forward to our next outing—an evening of bowling fun on Wednesday 19th November. Whether you’re a seasoned bowler or just coming along for the laughs, we can’t wait to see you there.
Until then, thank you to everyone who made this session so special. Your presence, energy, and kindness continue to shape our vibrant Headway family.
