🧠 80 Admissions a Day: The Hidden Scale of Acquired Brain Injury in Yorkshire and the Humber
At Headway Huddersfield and District, we know that behind every statistic is a story—of resilience, recovery, and the need for support. The latest figures from 2023/24 reveal the scale of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) across Yorkshire and the Humber, and they’re a powerful reminder of why our work matters.
📈 The Numbers Speak Volumes
In the past year, there were 29,118 hospital admissions for ABI-related diagnoses across our region. That’s an average of 80 admissions every single day.
These admissions include:
Head injuries: 10,475
Strokes: 12,520
Brain tumours: 4,067
Other conditions: including meningitis, encephalitis, and hydrocephalus
ABI is used as shorthand for these diagnoses, but it’s important to note: not all admissions result in long-term disability, and admissions don’t equate to individuals. One person may be admitted multiple times, and overall, individual patients make up around 85% of all ABI admissions, and over 90% of head injury admissions.
🧩 What These Figures Mean for Our Community
These numbers reflect a wide spectrum of experiences—from those who recover quickly to those who face lifelong challenges. For many, ABI leads to changes in memory, mobility, communication, and emotional wellbeing. Families, carers, and professionals are often deeply affected too.
At Headway Huddersfield and District, we’re here to bridge the gap between hospital discharge and long-term recovery. We offer:
Drop-in sessions in Huddersfield, with the hope of extending this to Dewsbury, and Halifax
Peer-led activities and lived experience workshops
Training for legal, rehabilitation, and case management professionals
Community events and fundraising initiatives that bring people together
💬 Why Awareness Matters
ABI is often invisible. It doesn’t always come with a wheelchair or a plaster cast. That’s why raising awareness is vital—not just among healthcare professionals, but across workplaces, schools, and communities.
We’re calling on local partners, sponsors, and supporters to help us:
Expand inclusive services across Calderdale and Kirklees
Promote lived experience and interactive learning
Fundraise for seasonal events and study days
Celebrate survivors’ journeys and amplify their voices
