A Welcoming Evening Out: February’s 3rd Wednesday Trip to Istanbul Turkish Restaurant
Social isolation is one of the most common and challenging consequences of brain injury. Changes in personality, cognition, behaviour, and fatigue can all make it harder for survivors to stay connected, and many find that their social circles shrink over time. Headway’s own research highlights this reality: more than 70% of brain injury survivors report a deterioration in their social life, with a similar number feeling that people around them don’t fully understand the ongoing effects of their injury. This is exactly why our monthly 3rd Wednesday outings matter so much.
On Wednesday 18th February 2026, our group headed to the Istanbul Turkish Restaurant in Huddersfield for an evening designed with accessibility, comfort, and connection at its heart. These trips aren’t just about going somewhere nice—they’re about creating safe, welcoming spaces where survivors, families, and carers from across Calderdale and Kirklees can enjoy time together without pressure or barriers.
A Thoughtfully Planned Evening
Many brain injury survivors find busy, noisy environments overwhelming, and decision-making can be difficult when fatigue or cognitive changes are at play. With that in mind, this month’s outing was arranged on a quieter evening, with background music kept at a comfortable level. Everyone chose their meal in advance, helping to reduce stress on the night and allowing people to simply relax and enjoy the experience.
The team at Istanbul Turkish Restaurant were fantastic—warm service, delicious food, and a calm atmosphere that helped everyone feel at ease.
Removing Barriers to Participation
Financial hardship is another challenge that often follows a brain injury. To ensure no one ever feels excluded, the entire cost of the meal was covered using funds raised through our 2025 fundraising efforts. This support means that every survivor, family member, and carer can join us without worrying about affordability.
These evenings are about belonging, not budgets.
Why These Outings Matter
For many in our community, rebuilding confidence in social settings takes time. A supportive group, a predictable plan, and a friendly environment can make all the difference. Our monthly outings offer:
A chance to reconnect with others who understand
A break from isolation
A safe space to practise social skills
A reminder that no one is facing their journey alone
Every shared meal, every conversation, and every moment of laughter helps strengthen the sense of community that sits at the heart of Headway Huddersfield & District.
If you’d like to join us for a future outing or learn more about our activities, we’d love to welcome you. Together, we continue building a community where survivors and their families feel supported, understood, and included.
