Neuropsychology on the Water – A Calm, Connected Day at Hollingworth Lake

On Friday 11th September 2026, members from across Calderdale and Kirklees joined us at Hollingworth Lake for a very special experience: Neuropsychology on the Water, delivered by Kate Dimmock and the brilliant team at Attain Outdoor Community.

This unique session brought together adapted canoeing, nature connection and gentle neuropsychological principles to explore how the mind and body work together in everyday life. For people living with long‑term neurological conditions and brain injury, the day offered a rare blend of confidence‑building activity, calm surroundings and supportive community.

A Safe, Supported Adventure

Kate and her team created an environment where everyone felt safe, encouraged and able to take part at their own pace. The adapted canoeing session lasted over an hour, giving participants time to settle into the rhythm of the water, build trust in the equipment and enjoy the sense of freedom that comes with being outdoors.

For many, this was their first time trying canoeing — yet the atmosphere was relaxed, reassuring and full of quiet achievement.

Neuropsychology in Everyday Life

Throughout the session, Kate introduced simple neuropsychological ideas:

  • how the brain responds to new experiences

  • how calm environments support regulation

  • how movement and nature can help reset and reconnect

  • how shared activity strengthens confidence and social connection

These ideas were woven gently into the day, helping participants understand how small, meaningful experiences can support wellbeing.

Time in Nature

After the canoeing, we spent time in the woodland around the lake — a chance to breathe, reset and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Being outdoors together created space for conversation, reflection and connection with like‑minded people who understand the challenges of living with neurological conditions.

A Welcoming Community

The feedback from those who attended has been excellent. Members spoke about feeling calmer, more confident and grateful for the chance to try something new in a supportive environment. The sense of community was clear throughout the day — people encouraging one another, sharing stories and celebrating small wins.

Looking Ahead – A Six‑Week Course on the Water

We’re delighted to share that Kate has offered to run a six‑week mindfulness course on the water, using canoes as a gentle, accessible way to explore calm, focus and connection.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our members — but now comes the hard part. We need to raise the funds to make this programme possible.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be reaching out to supporters, partners and local organisations to help us bring this to life. If you or your organisation would like to support the programme, please get in touch. Every contribution will help us offer something truly meaningful to people living with neurological conditions and brain injury.
