Finding Calm on the Water: Reflections from Our Annual Canal Barge Trip with Safe Anchor Trust
On Wednesday 15th July 2026, we set off once again from Shepley Bridge Marina for one of the most cherished dates in our calendar — our annual canal barge trip along the Calder and Hebble Navigation, delivered in partnership with the incredible volunteers at Safe Anchor Trust.
Every year, this trip offers something truly special. For many of our members across Calderdale and Kirklees, life after brain injury can bring challenges that make social connection harder to maintain. Days like this are designed to counter that — creating space to relax, reconnect, and enjoy time together in a calm, supportive environment.
This year’s journey was no exception.
As the barges moved gently along the water, conversations flowed, worries eased, and the simple pleasure of being outdoors brought a sense of peace that many of our members rarely get to experience. When we asked them to share their thoughts at the end of the trip, one word came up more than any other: relaxing.
Their reflections — captured in the video below — say more than any written summary ever could. You’ll hear about the comfort of being on the water, the joy of shared company, and the importance of having moments that feel safe, steady, and restorative. These insights remind us why this trip continues to be one of the highlights of the year.
None of it would be possible without the dedication of our volunteers and the exceptional team at Safe Anchor Trust. Their kindness, patience, and commitment ensure that every member feels welcome, supported, and valued throughout the day. We are deeply grateful for everything they do.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to creating opportunities that reduce social isolation, build confidence, and bring survivors together in meaningful ways. Sometimes, the most powerful support comes from the simplest experiences — a quiet stretch of water, good company, and the chance to breathe.
We hope you enjoy hearing our members’ thoughts as much as we did.
