A Day of Calm, Connection and Community: Our Annual Canal Barge Trip with Safe Anchor Trust
On Wednesday 15th July 2026, our members gathered at Shepley Bridge Marina for one of the most anticipated events of the year — our annual canal barge trip along the Calder and Hebble Navigation, delivered with the invaluable support of the Safe Anchor Trust.
This trip has become a cornerstone of our calendar for a simple reason: it brings people together. For survivors of brain injury across Calderdale and Kirklees, social isolation can be a persistent challenge. Creating opportunities to reconnect, relax and share experiences is central to our mission — and few activities achieve this quite like a gentle day on the water.
As the barge moved steadily along the canal, the atmosphere shifted into something beautifully calm. Conversations unfolded naturally, worries softened, and the peaceful surroundings gave everyone space to simply be. When we asked members to share their thoughts at the end of the journey, one word rose above all others: relaxing.
Their reflections — captured in the photos below — show exactly why this trip means so much. You’ll see moments of laughter, quiet contemplation, friendship, and the kind of ease that can be hard to find in everyday life after brain injury.
Photo Gallery: Moments from the Water
This year’s gallery captures the spirit of the day — from boarding at Shepley Bridge Marina to the gentle stretches of the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Each image reflects the warmth, connection and confidence that grow naturally when people feel supported and included.
Made Possible by Volunteers
None of this would happen without the dedication of our volunteers and the exceptional team at Headway Huddersfield and District. Their commitment ensures every member feels welcome, safe and valued throughout the trip. We are deeply grateful for their time, energy and kindness.
As we look ahead, we remain focused on creating experiences that reduce isolation, build confidence and bring survivors together in meaningful ways. Sometimes the most powerful support comes from the simplest moments — a calm stretch of water, shared company, and the chance to breathe.
We hope you enjoy exploring the gallery and hearing our members’ thoughts. It was a day to remember.
