Celebrating Volunteers - Marie

Volunteer Spotlight: Marie’s Journey With Headway Huddersfield & District

At Headway Huddersfield & District, our volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do. They bring warmth, stability, humour and compassion to every drop‑in session, outing and online chat. Their dedication ensures that brain injury survivors across Calderdale and Kirklees always have a safe, supportive place to turn.

Today, we’re shining a light on one of our wonderful volunteers: Marie.

How Marie First Got Involved

Marie began volunteering with Headway Huddersfield & District after seeing first‑hand the difference that community support can make to people living with a brain injury. What started as a desire to “give something back” quickly became something much more meaningful.

She soon discovered a group full of warmth, laughter and genuine connection — a place where people look out for one another and where every volunteer becomes part of the wider Headway family.

What Volunteering Has Meant to Her

For Marie, volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about being part of a community that supports each other through the highs and lows.

She has spoken about how much she enjoys the friendships she’s built, the stories shared, and the moments of joy that happen at every session — whether that’s a lively game of bingo, a creative activity, or simply sitting with someone who needs a listening ear.

Like many of our volunteers, Marie has found that the experience is just as rewarding for her as it is for the people she supports.

The Power of Community

One of the things Marie values most is the sense of belonging that Headway offers. She often talks about how everyone — survivors, families, carers, volunteers and professionals — comes together to create a space where people feel understood and accepted.

It’s this community spirit that keeps her coming back month after month.

Why Marie Recommends Volunteering

Marie encourages anyone thinking about volunteering to give it a try. Whether you have lived experience, professional expertise or simply a desire to help others, there is a place for you at Headway Huddersfield & District.

Volunteering offers the chance to:

  • Make a real difference to people rebuilding their lives

  • Learn more about brain injury and long‑term recovery

  • Build friendships and connections

  • Be part of a supportive, welcoming community

As Marie puts it, you often “get far more out of it than you put in”.

Join Our Volunteer Team

We are always looking for new volunteers to help us support brain injury survivors across Calderdale and Kirklees. Whether you can help at drop‑ins, join us on outings, support fundraising or offer specialist skills, we’d love to hear from you.
