🚆 A journey with impact 💙

Updated: Jun 24

On Wednesday 18th June 2025 our members enjoyed a meaningful day out along the Penistone Line—travelling to Barnsley thanks to the generous support of the Penistone Line Partnership

For many in our group, this wasn’t just a scenic train ride—it was a confidence-building experience in assisted train travel. Designed especially with brain injury survivors in mind, this journey was shaped by a thoughtful survey led by Community Rail Officer Sarah Wells who took the time to understand our members’ needs and transform feedback into action.

The result? A supported travel experience that helps pave the way for greater independence on public transport. For some, this was their first train trip in years—and the smiles said it all.

A heartfelt thank you to Sarah and the Penistone Line Partnership for making this possible. Initiatives like these don’t just move people—they empower lives.

We took the Northern service from Brockholes to Barnsley for our first #TryTheTrain trip. Working with rail industry partners #accessibility and #passengerassistance is key to helping people access wider travel options and open up opportunities and choice to people with both visible and hidden disabilities.

Thank you to our committee members who facilitated the trip: Adrian Hawley, Tara Evans and Margaret Knight plus one of our volunteers Andrea Pearson.
